Michael & Jeri | Stunning early spring Louvre engagement session

I love my job as a Paris surprise proposal photographer, I get to meet the most amazing people! In this case, I had the honor of capturing the surprise proposal of Michael, an orthopedic surgeon from the United States. He wanted to ask Jeri, the love of his life, to spend the rest of their lives together. On a chilly March afternoon, next to the river Seine, Michael got on one knee, presented Jeri a stunner of a diamond ring and she said, of course YES!

I then learned what a sweet couple they are, with a shared passion for hockey, and living now outside of Chicago. Of course, formerly being from Minnesota, I had to boast also about my seven Chicago Marathons, and it was fun to share, because Michael and Jeri love sports too. It’s in these moments that I get to learn more about my clients, their story, and their lives. This is really fun for me, because it allows me to connect and learn from wonderful people visiting France. It’s not just about snapping photos, it’s about connecting and creating something memorable, something that means something and will mean something for many years to come.

Many clients who propose in Paris love to add on an engagement session the next day. It’s a great way to enjoy being newly engaged, while enjoying the sights of Paris together. It’s also a stress-free, fun and relaxed time for the person who proposed, who was often quite nervous leading up to the proposal. Many couples use their Paris engagement photos for their wedding Save the Date cards, and it’s one less thing they have to remember to do upon their return home.

The next day we met early, at 8:00 am. It’s essential to meet early in Paris, as it’s so busy with tourists and the soft morning light is its most lovely. Michael and Jeri chose the Louvre Museum courtyard for their engagement session, and despite it being quite cold, there was no rain and the wind had subsided.

Jerri looked so pretty in a floral inspired dress, with flow-y sleeves, and a bright, bold color, perfect to usher in the spring season. I also loved her shoes! Michael looked really sharp in a suit, and in a really pretty and unique color you don’t often see, they looked like models.

You also have the option in Paris of having your makeup professionally applied. Some of the best makeup artists in the world call Paris home, and I love referring my clients who wish for these services for their wedding, elopement or engagement session. I used to think it was a bit frivolous, but now I know from a photography standpoint, that makeup artists are magicians, and they make the skin look fresh and beautiful for photos, so it’s definitely something to consider.

At the Louvre, we have a lot of options, there are the beautifully ornate corridors, the staircases, the street lamps. Despite the fact that this royal palace has been used as a museum since 1793, it still feels regal. The light in the morning also is often magical, and my clients love being photographed with the glass pyramids, which were an addition added some 30-years ago, to great controversy. Now, they are beloved.

We walked around to various points in the courtyard, and then I absolutely had to take Michael and Jeri across the street to the gardens at the Palais Royal. In early spring you’ll find several blooming magnolia trees, some of the earliest blooming trees in Paris. Being that I’m in love with flowers and blooming things, I adore photographing my clients with Paris nature–or any nature in fact, as I also live and work in Provence and the French Riviera.

It was sad to have to say goodbye to this beautiful couple, but they had more celebrating to do, more Paris to see, and a trip to Italy to look forward to as well. I wish them so much happiness and joy in their married life together, and I’m so glad I was able to be a small part of their special time in Paris!
